St. Patrick's Day was proclaimed a Christian holiday in the early 17th century and is celebrated by the Catholic Church, the Russian Orthodox Church (revered on March 30; included in monthbooks on March 9, 2017), and individual Protestant churches (Anglican, Lutheran, and especially the Church of Ireland). This day symbolizes the adoption of Christianity in Ireland, and is also a celebration of the cultural heritage of Ireland as a whole. Celebrations on St. Patrick's Day usually include parades and festivals, performing keili dances and wearing green clothes or shamrocks. Christians also attend church services on this day. On this day, the restrictions associated with fasting are relaxed, and the use of alcohol is allowed.
